Using New Faces in the ClassroomNew Faces: Latinos in North Carolina is designed for use by middle and high school teachers as part of their yearlong curriculum. Lesson plans are designed to correlate with North Carolina Standards of Study. The lessons are likely to be most useful in Social Studies, Language Arts, English as a Second Language, and Spanish classes. For each unit, teachers can download the entire unit of lesson plans or individual modules within the unit. An outline of the module content is available on the Lesson Plans page of this website. This curriculum project is divided into 5 classroom units:
Each classroom unit contains:
The classroom materials are available via printable PDF documents with lesson plans, resources, and materials to help implement the curriculum. All materials are downloadable from this web site. Many of the activities include clips of independently-produced film and video. The video material tells N.C. and U.S. stories. These clips will soon be available on a free DVD and can also be viewed online. Some of the activities incorporate current events featured in North Carolina newspapers and other publications and others involve students in online investigation. Many of the activities that include use of online tools can also be adapted so that students without access to the internet or a computer can participate with preparation by the teacher. People from a variety of different perspectives will likely have strong opinions about the ideas and issues addressed in the New Faces curriculum. However, we believe the activities and resources are respectful of all learners. The program is balanced and provides factual information so that students may make their own decisions and communicate effectively and openly with one another about any potentially controversial content. Background for teachers on how to create a respectful and safe atmosphere for discussion of the topics has been included where appropriate in the curriculum. All we ask of you is that after you are finished using the New Faces materials with your class, please complete the online evaluation form for this project. Your comments will help us improve our web-based learning offerings. |
