Using the New Faces Project in the CommunityIn addition to being used in middle and high school classrooms, New Faces: Latinos in North Carolina is appropriate for popular education on immigration, race relations, cultural diversity, and dismantling racism and debunking stereotypes. Anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States is currently very strong, and Latinos are the targets of the greatest backlash. It is essential that the wider community has opportunities to gain a greater understanding of the Latino community in North Carolina and a chance to examine the economic and social realities that drive migration to North Carolina and the United States. For this reason, service organizations, faith based institutions, advocacy organizations, cultural diversity trainers and others will find the film clips and lesson plans in the curriculum useful for community forums, dialogues, teach-ins, or other popular education activities. The documentary clips and accompanying lesson plans in New Faces have been designed to spark meaningful conversations, consciousness raising, and ultimately action on issues such as the roots causes of migration, reform of the immigration system, the breakdown of stereotypes and prejudice, and struggles for workers rights. This curriculum project is divided into 5 units:
