The lesson plans include both classroom-based and Internet activities for 8th – 12th graders, vocabulary terms, and evaluation suggestions. All the classroom activities incorporate video clips from documentaries. A free DVD of the clips is available to all teachers and non-profit organizations in NC. The video clips can also be viewed online.
Unit 1 - About Latinos
| Through the video clips and accompanying lessons of Unit 1 students will learn about the differences among members of the population collectively referred to as “Latinos” and realize the diversity in geography, language preferences, and culture among these groups of peoples. Students will also understand the timeline for Latino migration into the United States and specifically to North Carolina and will examine the diversity of reasons why Latinos are moving to the state. |

Unit 2 - About Latino Youth
| Through the video clips and accompanying lessons of Unit 2 students will examine the educational challenges faced by children of migrant workers and other Latino immigrants. Students will also gain an understanding of the complex political issues regarding immigration policy and education and the effects of these policies on some Latino youth. Students will also be exposed to the feelings and experiences of Latino youth when dealing with bilingual/bicultural issues. Finally, students will learn about contributions made by Latino youth to their communities by examining their work with an organization called Student Action with Farmworkers. |

Unit 3 - About Latino Workers
| Through the video clips and accompanying lessons of Unit 3 students will learn about the growing Latino workforce in North Carolina, examining in detail the impact of Latinos’ contributions in certain sectors of the economy. Students will be exposed to challenges faced by some Latino farmworkers, which include human rights issues such as unfair working and living conditions. They will also gain an understanding of the H2A farmworker visa program, which allows foreign born workers to come to the United States for seasonal farm labor. Students will also be introduced to the relationship between the American and Mexican economies and the ways in which this relationship is shaping our economy in North Carolina. |

Unit 4 - Latino Challenges and Contributions
| Through the video clips and accompanying lessons of Unit 4 students will learn about the differences between being a Latino who is a citizen or legal resident of the United States and a Latino who is undocumented. They will also understand the constant threat of deportation that undocumented Latinos face. Students will understand the economic contributions of Latinos to N.C. by examining Latino buying power and entrepreneurship. Students will learn about the variety of industries in which Latinos make up a large percentage of an essential workforce and will critically examine the idea that Latino workers are taking jobs away from other North Carolinians. Students will also examine Latino cultural traditions and the ways these traditions are being shared throughout North Carolina. |
